Churn analysis

Definition of churn analysis

Churn analysis is the process of examining why customers leave a company. The term “churn” refers to the rate at which customers leave over a specified period. Churn analysis is important in customer relationship management (CRM) and is widely used across many industries.

Why churn analysis matters

Retaining existing customers is significantly more cost-effective than acquiring new ones. Understanding why customers leave and implementing strategies to retain them is therefore critical to the long-term success of every company. Churn analysis allows companies to:

  • Identify risk factors – Understand which factors contribute to customer churn.
  • Segment customers – Use data to identify customer groups with a high risk of churn.
  • Increase retention – Develop strategies and actions that increase customer loyalty and satisfaction.
  • Optimize marketing activities – Direct marketing campaigns toward customers most at risk of leaving.
  • Improve products and services – Use feedback from departing customers to improve the quality of products and services.

Churn analysis methods

  • Cohort analysis

This method groups customers by the date of their first purchase or another important metric and tracks their behavior over time. It shows how different customer groups respond to changes in an offer or marketing strategy.

  • Predictive modeling

Advanced machine learning algorithms such as logistic regression, decision trees, random forests, and neural networks predict which customers are most likely to leave. These models analyze historical customer data to identify patterns and predict future behavior.

  • Causal analysis

This method focuses on identifying the causes of customer churn by analyzing factors such as product satisfaction, price, customer service quality, competition, and others. It includes surveys, customer interviews, and sales data analysis.

  • RFM analysis (recency, frequency, monetary value)

This method evaluates customers based on three criteria: their most recent transaction, transaction frequency, and the monetary value of transactions. RFM analysis identifies customers with a high risk of churn and segments them based on their value to the company.

Churn analysis tools

Examples of churn analysis applications

  • Telecommunications: Using churn analysis to understand why customers cancel services and move to competitors.
  • Finance: Identifying customers who are likely to stop using banking services based on transaction patterns.
  • E-commerce: Using churn analysis to understand why customers stop making purchases.

Summary

Churn analysis is a key customer relationship management tool. It enables companies to identify the causes of churn, predict which customers will leave, and implement effective retention strategies. With churn analysis, companies improve efficiency and increase customer loyalty, supporting long-term success.
