Migration from Alteryx to DataFlow or KNIME

We migrate Alteryx workflows to DataFlow or KNIME while preserving business logic, schedules, and quality controls. We start by cataloging processes and dependencies, then compare the old and new solution results before cutover.

For teams that want to make an informed platform change

This service is for companies with operational Alteryx workflows that are considering a platform change. Starting points include licensing terms and the cost of the current environment or an existing technology decision. We do not assume why an organization is making the change—during the analysis, we establish its objective, constraints, and acceptance criteria.

Astrafox supports clients that use Alteryx. We develop and maintain their existing environments and, when they want to move to another platform, lead the BI migration to DataFlow—Astrafox’s proprietary AI-assisted solution—or to KNIME.

Migration is not an automatic one-to-one rewrite of every workflow. For each process, we determine which elements must be reconstructed, which should be organized, and which should remain in Alteryx.

How the migration works

1. Workflow and dependency inventory

We collect the workflows included in the migration and document their data sources, connections, transformations, outputs, schedules, and dependencies. We identify business owners, critical processes, and the control results required for acceptance.

2. Target environment selection

We assess requirements for architecture, the way pipelines are built, team expertise, process execution, change history, and maintenance. We use this assessment to select DataFlow or KNIME for the agreed scope.

3. Logic and control reconstruction

We reconstruct data processing rules, source connections, schedules, error handling, and quality controls. The business logic remains unchanged, but its technical implementation is adapted to the target platform.

4. Result comparison

We run the process in the old and new environments using agreed control data. We compare the final output and key intermediate stages. We explain discrepancies before cutover.

5. Cutover

We cut over the processes in the established sequence. The migration can begin with the most critical or error-prone workflows, with subsequent processes moving after the previous stage has been accepted.

6. Maintenance and development

After cutover, we monitor runs, resolve errors, and develop the processes as sources and reporting requirements change. We also define the responsibilities of the Astrafox team and the client’s team for continued work.

When to choose DataFlow and when to choose KNIME

DataFlow

DataFlow is the right direction when an organization wants to:

  • work with its own data warehouse and execute processing in that environment;
  • store processing logic in SQL and dbt and keep its history in a repository;
  • have a data catalog, model dependencies, and column-level lineage in one environment;
  • use an AI assistant that understands the pipeline context, explains logic, and prepares proposed changes;
  • deploy the platform in its own infrastructure or use Astrafox hosting.

Changes prepared by the AI assistant undergo validation and enter use only after approval by an authorized person. The DataFlow page describes the product in detail.

KNIME

KNIME is the right direction when an organization wants to retain a visual method of building workflows from connected nodes, already has KNIME expertise, or has selected this platform as its target standard. The choice also considers the required method for running, sharing, and maintaining processes in the client’s environment.

We make the decision for a specific workflow portfolio. We do not assume that one platform is right for every organization or that every process must move to the same environment.

What can remain in Alteryx

The migration does not have to cover the entire environment. Workflows outside the agreed scope can remain in Alteryx, while Astrafox continues to maintain and develop them. This also applies when dependencies or use cases justify keeping some processes on the current platform.

If the company needs to develop its current environment instead of migrating, we provide Alteryx implementation and development services. Broader migrations of reports, data models, and ETL processes are covered by our Business Intelligence migration services.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Alteryx workflow need to be migrated?

No. We first determine which workflows the project covers and the order in which they should be migrated. Other processes can continue to run and be developed in Alteryx.

Is migration an automatic one-to-one rewrite of a process?

No. Workflow analysis accelerates the identification of tools, connections, and transformations, but the team reconstructs the logic in a structure appropriate for the target platform. Every process undergoes result verification.

How do you choose between DataFlow and KNIME?

We consider the data architecture, how processes are built and run, team expertise, requirements for change history, data catalog, maintenance, and the organization’s target technology standard.

How do you verify that results match after migration?

Before work begins, we agree on control results. We then run the old and new processes on the agreed data, compare the final output and key intermediate stages, and explain discrepancies before cutover.

Can the migration be completed in stages?

Yes. We divide the scope according to process criticality, dependencies, and exposure to errors. The next stage begins after the results and agreed scope of the previous stage have been verified and accepted.

Do you continue to support Alteryx after the migration?

Yes. We maintain and develop workflows that remain in Alteryx and support the target environment. We establish the division of responsibilities during migration planning.
