A webhook is a mechanism through which a system sends a message to a specified address when a defined event occurs. It can notify another application that a document has been approved, a payment has changed status, or a new file has appeared. The receiving system does not need to poll the source system repeatedly for a change. Implementing a webhook requires sender verification, an encrypted connection, and handling for repeated messages, errors, and receiver downtime. An event identifier is also important because it prevents the same operation from being performed multiple times. A webhook often triggers the next integration step through an API or queue.
