A REST API is a communication interface based on REST architectural principles and the HTTP protocol. A system exposes resources at defined addresses, and a client uses methods such as GET, POST, PUT, or DELETE to read or modify them. Data is often transferred as JSON. In business integration, the important elements extend beyond endpoint addresses to authentication, permissions, pagination, identifiers, error messages, and rate limits. The project must also determine whether an operation can be retried safely after a connection is interrupted. REST APIs are a common part of ERP integrations, workflows, custom applications, and cloud services. Explore Software & Integrations.
