Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

Definition

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) defines the maximum acceptable amount of recent data loss after a failure. It is expressed as a period of time measured backward from the event. If the RPO is one hour, the solution should support recovery to a point no more than approximately one hour before the failure. This parameter affects backup frequency, replication, architecture, and cost. It should not be selected solely as a technical setting: the process owner must assess how much data can be reconstructed from other sources and the impact of losing it. RPO should be agreed together with RTO and verified regularly through recovery tests. Explore Astrafox Cloud & Infrastructure.
