A DMS, or document management system, is a system for managing documents. It supports file and metadata storage, version control, search, permissions, and operation history. A DMS primarily answers two questions: where is the correct document, and who can use it? A workflow extends this scope to the flow of work, including tasks, decisions, deadlines, and rules. Both approaches work together so that a document remains organized while moving through a process. An implementation requires decisions about structure, retention, roles, and integrations with other systems. Explore process automation.
